Certass, which stands for certification and self-assessment, is a not for profit organisation dedicated to raising standards in the glazing industry. Certass, established in 2006, operates a glazing competent person's scheme (CPS) under government licence. The Thermal Rating Register, also managed by Certass, ensures thermal compliance of replacement windows and doors.

Competent person schemes were introduced by the government to allow contractors to self-certify that their work complies with the Building Regulations as an alternative to submitting a building notice or using an approved inspector.

In simple terms, this means that Certass financially and technically assess its members to ensure they meet current UK Building Regulations.

Certass notifies the local authority of the installation and the Building Regulation Compliance Certificate is issued to the householder.

Since 2002 it has been mandatory for any replacement of windows for doors in a domestic dwelling to be issued with a certificate as laid out above. When you come to sell you home the purchasers solicitors will require a copy of this certification to complete any house purchase.

All Certass members are checked against the following criteria:

  • Trading record and financial status
  • Estimates are provided in plain language
  • Contractors adhere to the "7 day cooling off" legislation
  • Guarantee wording is fair
  • Consumers are given or offered an insurance backed guarantee
  • Contractors operate a complaints handling procedure
  • Sample installations are annually inspected
  • Window installations meet current thermal rating regulations

Certass and the Thermal Rating Register prides themselves on delivering a fair, friendly and cost effective service to both the industry and consumers.
